Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was a Catalan architect and the best-known practitioner of Catalan Modernism. Gaudí’s works have a highly individualized, one-of-a-kind style. Most are located in Barcelona and are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Gaudí made an exceptional creative contribution to the development of architecture and building technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These monuments represent an eclectic, very personal style which was given free rein in the design of gardens, sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture, including his main work, the church of the Sagrada Família. Gaudí’s work was highly influenced by his childhood, his professors, the economic conditions in Spain, and other Civil Engineering developments in Barcelona. The course will review his life and achievements in chronological order as well as his influence on the continuation and completion of the Sagrada Familia. It will also consider Gaudi’s influence on those who followed his example.
