Do you know that in the Ft. Payne area there is a spectacular cross-section of ancient rocks with great geological scenery and fossils? It’s probably the best spot in the state for seeing interesting and important rock layers and the amazing effects of geologic processes over time. With Dr. Jim Lacefield as our instructor, we will cover hundreds of millions of years of geologic time in a very easy one-day drive.

We will drive our private cars to the Canyon Center at Little River Canyon National Preserve, about 12 miles SE of Ft. Payne. At an introductory lecture starting at 10:30 at the Center, Dr. Lacefield will familiarize us with the subject matter of the day, acquainting us with geologic highlights we will plan to view in the next few hours. Then following a catered box lunch we will caravan to locations notable to understanding the geologic history of the area, exiting our cars at each point for further orientation. The tour will consist of a selection of sites from five possible venues which will have been described in the lecture. Come prepared with your cameras and binoculars!

The cost will be $25 per person for box lunch and other fees. Make your check to Jim Harlow and mail to him at 1224 Clubhouse Ave, Huntsville AL 35802 by March 31 along with your signed liability waiver form.
