As people moved into the wilderness that would later be called Alabama, most brought with them everything they owned: furniture, livestock, seeds for planting, and many brought one book – the Bible. It was used to teach the children how to read and how to live a moral life. Soon, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and other religious leaders followed the settlers and built houses of worship that still stand. In this course, we will visit some of the oldest centers of worship as we learn more about the settlers and the faith they brought with them.
