Following the Civil War, laws were enacted for the specific purpose of restricting the newfound freedoms of former slaves. Certain rights were allowed, such as legalized marriage, ownership of property, and limited access to the courts, but others were denied to the former slaves. Black Codes were a predecessor of “Pig Laws” and Jim Crow laws.
