In 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter (though famed for his sculpture David), Michelangelo was reluctant to begin this laborious project, but worked on the vast ceiling for four extraordinary years.

This course will reveal the power politics, history, and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome and how they affected Michelangelo. The recent cleaning of the Sistine Chapel frescoes removed layer after layer of centuries of accumulated tarnish and darkness. Secrets of the Sistine Chapel will reveal Michelangelo’s hidden codes and reveal many secrets about one of the world’s most famous and beloved art treasures.
