Wheeler Wildlife Refuge

Leader: Tom Ress

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur annually hosts thousands of sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, pelicans, and other waterfowl. It also hosts an increasing number of majestic and endangered whooping cranes. It is home to almost 300 species of birds, plus mammals and reptiles including bobcats, otters, deer, coyotes, and, yes, alligators! Come hear about this natural wonder and learn about the birds and other wildlife that inhabit the refuge’s 34,500 acres. This program will take place at the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. After the program, attendees will take a short walk to the refuge observation building to see waterfowl up close. A limited number of binoculars are available at the refuge, but it is recommended that you bring your own. Transportation will be by personal vehicle. Directions will be provided after Rally Day
