This semester’s class will return to Humphrey Bogart for a second look at the iconic star’s films, starting with The Petrified Forest (1936), the film that began Bogart’s rise to Hollywood stardom thanks to his friend and costar, Leslie Howard. The second picture will be They Drive by Night (1940), in which Bogart plays an important supporting role that helped advance his career. We will then return to the two Bogart films we didn’t see last term, To Have and Have Not (1944), and The Big Sleep (1946), both costarring Lauren Bacall who would become Bogart’s wife in 1945.
