In this course, we explore the significance of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche for our times. Topics include: Nietzsche’s biography and position in the history of Western thought; his views on language and truth, his philosophy of music and friendship with Richard Wagner; his theories of the transvaluation of values, the “Übermensch”, and the eternal recurrence of the same; and the beauty, clarity, and elegance of his writing style. No special knowledge of Nietzsche or any other philosopher is required. Links to brief texts and videos will be provided on the syllabus, but they are optional. Participants from all backgrounds are welcome.
