P3-Maple Hills 35801

October 14 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Maple Hill is the oldest cemetery in continuous use in Alabama and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was established circa 1822 when the city purchased two acres of land from Leroy Pope. Prior to 1905, it did not have a name. It was simply known as “The Burying Ground.” It was named ina city-wide contest sponsored by the local news paper. There are five U.S. Senators and five Alabama Governors, buried in Maple Hill in addition to statesmen, politicians, business leaders, ministers, teachers, and working men and women who built this city and state. There are 80,000 to 100,000 marked and unmarked graves in Maple Hill. Each has a story. Four of those will be presented during this program.
