In December 1939, the destruction of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee off the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay, was Britain’s first naval victory of WWII. This is a story of naval operations, military intelligence, deception, and human weakness. We will look at the Graf Spee’s military career as a raider and the story of its eventual scuttling as it sailed out of Montevideo harbor.
