Take a journey through the rich history of Oakwood University – one of two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the Tennessee Valley. Founded in 1896 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Oakwood became known as the “Mecca of Black Adventism.” This course explores the school’s formative years, its impact on Huntsville/Madison County, famous graduates of the university, and the continued mission of Oakwood. See how the descendants of oppressed people, on the grounds of what was once plantation lands of slaveholders, are transformed each day into the hopes and dreams of their ancestors.
