This class will explore the Scottsboro Boys case and the plight of nine black youths falsely accused of attacking two white women. They will consider the “Old South’s” ideology of white privilege that put at risk the lives of innocent victims and will study the trial’s impact on local citizens of both races, who were caught in the grueling rancor of Jim Crowism and its consequences. We will examine issues of bigotry, inequality and injustice – subjects still relevant today.
