This course will provide an overview of Alabama’s messy history of voting and the ongoing struggle to protect and ensure that all citizens are able to vote. The 1901 Alabama Constitution enshrined poll taxes, literacy tests, and other discriminatory legislation that were specifically aimed at preventing African Americans, women, and poor people in general from voting or having any political power. Over the years Alabama has been forced, by federal intervention, law suits, and nonviolent protests, to modify or clarify its constitution to remove objectionable, illegal laws.
