The presenter was 31⁄2 years old when she crossed paths with Georgia Tann at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society in Memphis. This is her story. She will present the history of Georgia Tann who has been listed as one of the ten most dangerous women in America. The story broke with the release of Lisa Wingate’s book entitled Before We Were Yours. Georgia Tann was the mastermind behind the adoption-for-money scandal that broke after her death in 1950. Some of the children from the home went to happy families; some did not. Some were voluntarily surrendered; others were stolen off street corners; many were taken from hospitals, and the parents were simply told that the child had died. Listen to stories from the two reunions held with children from the Home–stories of survival. Some reports estimate that over 500 children died under Georgia Tann’s lack of care. This program will give participants an inside look of this dark spot in our history. These children were victims of human trafficking before it had a name.
